Creative Heart, Business Brain: My Journey from VFS to BCIT

In the film industry, there is often a divide between the "creatives" on set and the "business" in the office. Having spent time in both worlds - first through Vancouver Film School (VFS) and now through Business Management at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), I have realized that the most successful projects happen where these two specialties meet.

The Creative Foundation at VFS

My journey began at VFS, where I developed a deep appreciation for narrative storytelling and visual arts. This was the "how to" phase: learning how to direct a scene in Intertwined or how to build a visual world as a producer on Runway Kill. It taught me to speak the language of directors and artists, a skill vital for any producer who wants to protect a film's creative integrity.

The Shift to BCIT

While VFS gave me the tools to create, my Advanced Diploma in BCIT is equipping me to lead. Transitioning into business management allowed me to look at production through a logistical lens. Whether it is managing high-volume communications for the Vancouver Canucks' season opener or navigating complex vendor contracts, my time at BCIT has professionalized my approach to production.
